Planning and Review

T he design and construction life cycle starts with planning and ends with review. The successful conduct of both of these phases are critical to the success of any facility or system design. The planning phase produces requirements that architects and engineers use to design buildings, structures and systems. Reviews document the success or shortcomings of existing buildings, structures and systems so that requirements can be defined. Our team of architects and engineers have developed plans and conducted reviews for a wide range of buildings and systems.

H ilo Intermediate School was expanding its student body to include sixth graders in additional to its seventh and eighth grades, and was also having stability problems with its administation building. The school was special, having been part of the Hilo community for over 80 years and the Department of Education had to be sensitive to any public sentiment for it. We were retained to conduct a planning study to identify options for the building. We performed structural analysis, conducted historical research, and held public hearings to obtain a holistic understanding of the problem. From this basis of understanding, we provided viable alternatives and a recommendation to the Department.
