Approaches and Solutions

E ach project is a challange to a design team who must derive an optimum solution from a myrid of choices. We arise to each challange with creativity, sensitivity, and pragmatism.

Make Effective Use of a Small Space Through Design

Residential Condominium Design

Waiola Court - Honolulu, Hawai`i
S pace is a premium on islands like Oahu, where we designed and managed the construction of Waiola Court, a residential condominium. Built on a corner lot, the condominium consists of four, 2 story, 3 bedroom, 3-1/2 bath townhouse units, each occupying a corner of the building. We designed the building to maximize living space and to include features such as an enclosed carport and a fenced yard each unit - prized features in a crowded neighborhood.

Use Non-traditional Building Materials to Reduce Costs

Church Design

St. Jude's Church - Makakilo, Hawai`i
B efore St. Jude's Church retained us, other archtitects submited designs for their sanctuary- all exceeded their limited budget. We proposed a prefrabicated, metal framed structure to provide maximum floor space and succeeded. Our design team took extreme care in designing the interior to ensure that the structure provided the proper ambiance befitting a house of worship. We took advantage of the metal structure to allow for elimination of unsightly air conditioning ducts from the ceiling, and as well as view blocking columns from the floor. We were able to provide an open and flexible space that can be reconfigured according to the Chruch's needs - all this within the Church's limited budget.

Apply Solutions Traditionally Used in One Setting to Other Non-Traditional Settings
Emergency Room Security Improvement Design

The Queen's Medical Center - Honolulu Hawai`i
A smuggled gun and shots fired in a busy emergency room prompted one of the major hospitals in the Honolulu area to retain us as designers of their emergency room's security. Using our experience with airport security systems, we made architectural modifications to the facility and installed an airport type security system. Improvements added doors, glass walls, and a security checkstation that included a security x-ray machine and a walk-through metal detector.

Revert to Traditional Methods to Achieve Comparable Results
Airport Terminal Design

Ke-ahole Airport - Kona, Hawai`i

Award Winning Project
S hizuo Oka, while with Aotani & Oka Architects, Inc. designed Ke-Ahole Airport, America's first purpose-built open-air airport facility. Originally consisting of 15 individual contemporary structures, these open-air structures with shake roofs, wood beams, and skylights are interconnected by a well-planned system of concrete walkways. The exterior walls of individual buildings were eliminated to views of the surrounding landscape and to take advantage of the area's year-round gentle tradewinds and moderate 70 to 85 degrees F. temperatures.

Use 3D Rendering for Visualization
Planning Study

Niu Valley Unocal Service Station - Honolulu, Hawai`i
C lients often have difficulty visualizing how a completed structure will fit with its surroundings. We produced this rendering to illustrate how a new service station would fit in an existing shopping center. We use this 3D rendering and insertion into an actual photograph technique to help our clients visualize how unbuilt buildings will integrate with its surroundings.
